With Géométrie Variable, Matthieu Villatelle uses magic to explore the mechanisms of fake news. He draws parallels between mentalists and digital giants, all experts in manipulating our attention.

Gustave Kuhn, Director of the Magic Lab (Department of Psychology, University of London), says: ‘Fake news uses the same mechanisms as magic tricks, both of which exploit our cognitive flaws by deceiving our attention and vigilance. They are both examples of proven fakes that nevertheless produce an impression of truth’.

Through a series of magical experiments that shake up our relationship with truth, Géométrie Variable sows confusion and questions our critical faculties and free will.
